TMJ Juno Beach FL - TMJ syndrome cause tenderness and pain in the temporomandibular joint. The TMJ connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone) in front of the ear. This joint allows you to talk, chew and yawn. Comprised of muscles, blood vessels, nerves, and bones, you have two TMJs, one on each side of your jaw.
TMJ syndrome can cause head and neck pain, a jaw that is locked in position or difficult to open, problems biting, and popping sounds when you bite.
Most cases of TMJ syndrome are temporary and treatment is usually conservative. In cases of persistent symptoms of TMJ, recommendations may range from medications to a bite guard to help keep you from grinding your teeth at night. In very rare cases, surgery may be required to repair or replace the joint.
Surgical procedures can include the following:
- Corrective dental treatment. We can improve your bite by balancing the biting surfaces of your teeth, replacing missing teeth, or replacing needed fillings or crowns.
- Arthrocentesis. This procedure involves insertion of a needle into the joint so that fluid can be irrigated through the joint to remove debris and inflammatory byproducts.
- Surgery. In rare cases surgery may be required to repair or remove the disk between your mandible and temporal bone. With advanced osteoarthritis is present, a partial or total joint replacement may help remove bone-on-bone contact and improve both joint mechanics and motion.
