Overbites And Underbites in West Palm Beach

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Overbites And Underbites When the upper part of the jaw and the lower part of the jaw are not the same size, bite problems can occur. When the lower jaw is smaller than the upper jaw, it is called an overbite. When the reverse is true, it is called an underbite. Another related alignment disorder is called a crossbite. Crossbites occur when lower teeth are in the wrong position. They may be incorrectly positioned sideways, forward or backward.

Malocclusion (literally ‘bad bite’) is the term used for all types of bite problems including overbites, underbites and crossbites. Jaw alignment disorders (known as TMD) can cause a range of problems and often prohibit proper chewing and/or swallowing. Teeth can shift around in the mouth, causing even more discomfort or difficulty. Gum disease and tooth decay are also harder to prevent because proper oral hygiene can be difficult with a malocclusion. TMJ disorder can develop over time. Distorted facial shape and unattractive teeth are often the most noticeable and troubling issues for those affected.

Fortunately, there are a variety of effective treatments for bite problems. If you suspect your child has a bite misalignment, it is especially important to have them examined as early as possible. By starting early, you can make sure they avoid years of pain and self-consciousness.

Treatment For Stress Induced Jaw Pain In Juno Beach

Everyday aggravators cause many West Palm Beach people to respond by clenching their jaw or grinding their teeth. For example, daily commuting in West Palm Beach can take a physical toll. All the traffic, noise, and perpetual road construction causes some people to grind their teeth as they navigate the sea of cars.

Some West Palm Beach folks who hate waiting in long lines channel their frustration to their jaw as they try, by the sheer force of will, to cause the line to move faster.

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching can cause a painful condition called TMD or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. In West Palm Beach, TMD is often mistakenly called ‘TMJ‘: the acronym for Temporomandibular Joint.

Your jaw is able to open and close thanks to many jaw muscles and the intricate temporomandibular joints. These joints allow for fluid mobility as you chew, speak, and yawn.

Damage to these joints can lead to chronic pain in the jaw, head, face and neck. Pain may be experienced on one or both sides of the jaw.

TMD is an often misdiagnosed condition in West Palm Beach because facial pain can result from a variety of things, not just damage to the temporomandibular joints. Sinus infections, tooth decay, and facial inuries can cause jaw pain. A correct diagnosis is necessary for treating TMD.

At Center for Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry we have been diagnosing and treating TMD since 1999. If you are experiencing clicking, popping, or discomfort in your jaw, call Center for Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry today for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Center for Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry TMJ treatment has helped countless grateful Juno Beach TMJ patients manage their TMJ disorder.

The Temporomandibular or jaw joint connects the lower jaw bone to the skull. Symptoms of TMJ disorder include jaw and facial pain, headaches, earaches, neck pain and chewing difficulty. TMJ disease is often associated with jaw clicking, locking or clenching, and can cause tooth damage and bone loss.

Many TMJ patients first sought a possible TMJ diagnosis after trying unsuccessfully to relieve their frequent headaches. Since opening Center for Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry in 1999, we have discovered that many people do not realize they have TMJ disorder because it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what is causing the pain. A Florida TMJ specialist can properly diagnose your specific TMJ issues and recommend an effective TMJ treatment.

Because a comprehensive treatment plan is most successful, we work hand-in-hand with a network of TMJ specialists including ENT doctors, neurologists and physical therapists. There are many facets to this often misunderstood disorder. If you are suffering from jaw pain, we recommend a consultation with cosmetic dentist Brion Weinberg at Center for Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry in Juno Beach.  We serve patients in the Juno Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, North Palm Beach, and West Palm Beach areas.
